Impressions of Northern Brazil
Brazil occupies a peculiar place in South America as the only Portuguese speaking country, surrounded by former Spanish colonies. It covers on its own about half of the continent's territory. There is consequently no surprise in the enormous diversity of natural environments, cultures and even flows of history. Sand and dunes, that is essentially what the northern coastal region between São Luís and Fortaleza is about. But not in a trivial way, because the Lençóis Maranhenses offer a spectacle equalled nowhere, as the towering dunes of sparkling white sand are embraced by whimsically shaped lagoons of fresh water, left behind from the summertime rainy season. São Luís and particularly Salvador da Bahia reflect like no other the early colonial history of the country, in all its dimensions. Salvador, the Brazilian Portuguese colony's first capital since the 16th century, emphatically carrying in its background of character, of culture and of everything else, the African roots which have decisively contributed with courage, toil, sacrifice and tragedy to shape Brazil into what it is today. The Brazil we are about to discover in its northern regions. Click!
